How To Choose A New Exterior Paint Color For Your North Texas Home

How To Choose An Exterior Paint Project in North Texas

The color of your house is an expression of who you are, which makes picking a new color a very big deal. It takes time to choose a color which is right for you and your neighborhood as you find the balance between too boring and too bold.

As if this isn’t enough pressure, not only is the color of your house a statement but the right color can also add value and highlight the best features of your home.

Whether you need help starting off or just narrowing your list, use the following advice to find a color perfect for you and your home.

1. Avoid Common Mistakes

If you have your heart set on a color, it can be tempting to go ahead with no consideration for the neighbors or surroundings of your home. However, this route will never be in your favor if your home clashes with your neighborhood.

Similarly, while your neighbor’s house may give you inspiration, be sure not to copy the paint color exactly. The key is to find a color which complements the surroundings and allows your house to stand out, without clashing with nearby buildings.

Another common mistake is painting your house a color which makes the unattractive elements more pronounced. By the time you realise the color of your home is making the gutter a standout feature, you will likely have almost finished painting it. Avoid this mistake by assessing the exterior features of your house and following point number two…

2. Use Accents to Highlight Unique Exterior Features

Consider the architecture of your house and pick out and plan the features you want to accentuate to visitors and passers by. Does your home have stairs or railings? Does it have wooden windows or columns? Consider their placement and the attention you’d want to draw to them.

The best way to highlight these features is by either choosing a complementary color and not painting the features themselves, or by using a color scheme to choose accented colors specifically for the features. Use an experienced exterior painter to achieve the desired look and ensure your paint job is of the highest quality.

3. Use Dark/Light Colors To Create Larger/Smaller Illusions

The rules of color we all know apply to the exterior home as much as they apply to the interior, and even your clothing. Darker colors are always used to make the object look smaller, however it’s worth noting that on a home, this isn’t always a bad thing if surrounded by a considerable sized lot. Meanwhile, a light home on a small lot will make the house seem imposing.

Sherwin-Williams recommends using a couple of shades from the same color strip to overcome this problem. By using different shades of the trim and features versus the body of the house, you can create environments which feel more welcoming.

Darker/Lighter colors can also create placement illusions. If your house is inset from the sidewalk, painting it a lighter color will create the illusion that it’s closer.

As a local North Texan company, Texas Painting and Gutters can help you find the right color scheme and assess the best exterior features of your property to highlight. The high-quality Sherman-Williams paint we use is durable against the Texan weather and ensures your home will stand out.
