Can You Paint Over Wallpaper?

We have been asked about this often through the years; especially when new homeowners purchase an older home and would like to give it an updated look with an interior painting project.

So, can you paint over wallpaper?

Some may say yes, but we don’t advise it and here’s why:

Wallpaper over time can peel and roll up on the corners and depending on who originally installed it, it may show the seams.

Painting over the paper can show the details of the wallpaper; so, if it’s painted you must do it correctly, otherwise the paper may start bubbling, peeling or coming loose in corners, leaving all that hard work, effort and money gone to waste.

I don’t know about you, but that would make me very unhappy.
